I am working on this family in the autumn of 2007. (Alan)

I am having a bit of trouble getting George L. Huestis fixed in time and place. He was born and raised in Wentworth, on his father's farm. According to the article below he lived in USA and while there married Susan Egan and returned to Nova Scotia.

It appears that after James Huestis of Wallace died in 1879, James Huestis of Wentworth (the son) moved with his wife and son to Wallace to work the family farm. They all appear in Wallace in the 1881 census: Melinda Huestis the widow (age 83), James (50), Lavinia (47) and George (26).

In 1885 James Huestis died, and in October of 1888 his widow, Lavinia Huestis (then age 55) married Silas Fulton of East Wallace, 57, a single farmer. They seem to have moved to Little River (near Oxford), and Lavinia Huestis Fulton died in 1917.

By 1891 the census shows that George and Susan are living in a household with children James Leslie (age 7) and Etta, age 5. (There is no mention of Wylie, who would have been 10.) The rest of the children followed in due course.

Here's a news item from the Oxford Journal from 1950:

Wallace Station. Mrs Susan Egan celebrated her 92nd birthday on Wednesday December 13.

She was born at Wallace Station in 1858 and lived there on her parents' farm. She became employed in the USA where she married George L. Huestis of Wentworth, NS on January 19, 1881.

They returned to Wallace Station and settled on the farm next to her home, where she resides to this day with her son Leslie.

She has eight children, twenty-three grandchildren and fifty-one great-grandchildren.

Her husband passed away June 9, 1909. She is very active, takes care of the house, prepares the meals, and on fine days she walks to their rural mail box to collect the mail. She has very good eyesight without the use of glasses.

She says that she attributes her long life and good health to going to bed early and rising early in the morning, with much hard work, and recently, to the good care that her son, Leslie, with whom she resides.

Those who celebrated her birthday with her were her daughter (Retha) Mrs George Reid of Wallace, also her her son Wylie of Wallace, and her great-granddaughter Carolyn Allen of Wallace.

Etta Priscilla Huestis [H13813] (1887 - 1968) m. Arthur Bendell
  • Ernest Bendell
  • Eldon Bendell

Etta moved to Brockton, Mass. shortly after marrying Arthur Bendell, a Newfoundland native. Mr Bendell worked all of his life in shoe factories. Nephew George Huestis remembers visiting the Bendell home when he was young, and always remembers her delicious roast beef and yorkshire pudding Sunday dinners. Uncle Arthur was a great teaser. Etta's obituary follows (supplied by great-grandson Jeff Hewitt; many thanks)
