Early Huestis Names

The generations before Thomas

Home | Names List

My (Alan's) interest in the Huestis genealogy starts with Thomas, the Loyalist who came to Canada from America after the American Revolution. I have always left the generations before Thomas for others to search out and explore.

In the past few years there has been a great deal of research and investigation on the Huestis families in the colonies. One of the most notable contributions has been that of Gordon Remington, a professional genealogist, who was engaged to sort out the generations in America and to resolve the problems with the Huestis genealogy caused by the work of Mr Bolton, who produced a Huestis genealogy in the middle 1800's. That work has been relied on by other family researchers for years, but it had inconsistencies that bedeviled them.

Most of this new research has been synthesised by Charles Dixon Huestis of New Mexico, who has pulled together outside work and his own family material into an engaging report on the Huestis family from Dorset, England to modern day. CDH is descended from Benjamin Huestis, who was younger brother to our Thomas. Benjamin was a Patriot where Thomas was a Loyalist, so the two families' circumstances diverged at that time.

You can read Charles' essay here. I have included only the first generations, down to Thomas and Benjamin. If you are interested in the rest of Benjamin's line down to present day, I can put you in touch with Charles.
