Missing Persons

There are a lot of Huestis folk who show up in some records and then just officially disappear. In many cases these families have moved to Ontario or the USA, and in some cases they have passed away and been buried in locations where I would not think to look. I will be adding to this page as I run across these folks.

And if you are descended from any of these families, please check in with us. We would like to know how your crowd made out!

Philena Huestis and Phoebe Annie Huestis

These two are daughters of Joshua Huestis, and their lives are intertwined to some extent. Philena was born about 1850, and Phoebe Annie was born about 1839.

We find Philena living with her brother Martin, in Wallace, in the census of 1871. By 1881 she is living with her sister Annie Page, in River Philip (which is about 20 miles from Wallace). That's the last official record of Philena Huestis. She does not show up in the census of 1891, or subsequent censuses, and I cannot find a gravestone.

Sister Phoebe Annie Huestis appears in 1871 census as living with the Smith family in Pugwash, and in 1877 (age 36) she married Rufus Page, age 48, a merchant living in River Philip. (His father was Thomas Page, and in 1871 a Thomas Page ran a hotel in Wallace.) One of the witnesses at Annie's wedding was her brother, Martin. She also disappears from the census records for a while.

In 1900, Martin Huestis told his biographer that his sister Annie was married to A.E.C. Holland, of Prince Edward Island. I find Annie and husband Augustus Holland living at Wallace Bridge in the 1911 Census. Note that in 1912 she is mentioned (in the next article) as living in Wallace. I have been unable to find death records or gravestones.

George A. Huestis (1855 - 1912) He was the youngest son of Joshua Huestis, and was at times a clerk, a jeweller and watchmaker, and latterly, an inspector in the insurance industry. He married Lydia Webster of Point DeBute, NB, and they had children. His death is noted in this article from the Oxford Journal, dated 28 March 1912:

DEATH - GEO. A. HUESTIS

There are many friends in Windsor and throughout the province who will learn with regret the death of GEORGE A. HUESTIS, who died on the train while on his way from Ottawa to Springfield, Mass. He had been to the capital on business, but ill health compelled him to enter the hospital there, where he underwent an operation and after a short time, feeling that his end was near, expressed a wish to return home and died on the journey.

The deceased who formerly conducted business in Windsor, a watchmaker & jeweller, was about 55 years of age and had for sometime been employed in the insurance business as an inspector. He was born in Wallace, N.S. and is survived by his widow (who was a Miss WEBSTER of Pet't Codiac, NB), 2 sons and a daughter. 2 Brothers - Dr. S.F. HUESTIS of Halifax and M. B. HUESTIS for many years Manager of the Federal Life in Halifax, but more recently of Ottawa and by 4 sisters. Mrs. (Dr) KENNEDY, New Glasgow; Mrs. A.E.HOLLAND - Wallace; N.S. Mrs. C.W. MORRIS - Wallace, N.S.; Mrs.JOHN E. WARNER - Parrsboro, N.S.

It would be nice to know the names and some biographical details of George's children.
