This is St. John's United Church in Wallace. The Huestis family has been associated with this church since it was founded as St John's Methodist Church in 1808. We have sent several men into the ministry through St John's, and there are many generations of Huestis' buried in the churchyard. Note the monument on the grass. |
This image shows a bank of stained glass windows in St. John's United. The window on the left is dedicated to John and Jasper Huestis, the youngest of Thomas' sons. |
Dedication on one panel of the window. |
In the 1950's the main highway (as it was then) was widened and the cemetery of St John's United was disturbed. All of the headstones were moved into one area near the edge of the cemetery, and the remaining area was landscaped and grassed in. This cemetery had been full for years, and there were no recent graves. Here's a picture of that part of the church grounds, taken in October 2006. |
A few years ago the Wells Foundation (who concern themselves with the upkeep of cemeteries in Cumberland County) assisted with the development and installation of a monument that contains the names from the stones that were moved around in the St John's churchyard. Here's a shot of that monument. I also have closeups of the panels of the monument; if you want to read the names just email me and I will send or post the closeups. |
