Dr Gerald A. Huestis in the 1960's Dr Gerald A. Huestis, born 1920, was the oldest son of Ralph and Geraldine Huestis. He graduated from medical school in Portland, Oregon in 1945 and moved to Brooklyn for his internship. Gerald was in the US Army and so moved a round a bit, including a posting in occupied post-war Japan in 1949 - 50. After his return from Japan he did his residency in Santa Barbara and then on to Philadelphia for specialist training in surgery. Dr Huestis opened his practice in Santa Ana, California. Gerald and Hildegard were married in 1945, and the family moved from place to place until finally settling in Santa Ana. As a consequence, the children were born all over America. After he closed his practice Gerald and wife Alice (he had re-married) spent six months travelling around the world with backpacks. He did missionary work as a doctor in Saint Lucia in six-month stints for several years, and remained active until his death at age 84. Gerald Huestis was an avid and competitive swimmer all of his life. In his early years he competed in the Masters and his 4-man relay team always set records. Thanks to daughter Chris Huestis Storz for this material. June 2010 |
