Roy & Lila Huestis

Sidney O. Huestis was the manager of the Wallace Greystone Quarry in Wallace from 1877 when his father died until the early 1880's when the family appears to have moved to Halifax. I think that the Wallace Quarry was sold to other interests and there was no job for Sidney. His name appears in the McAlpine's Directories for Halifax from 1882 to 1892, with his occupations variously listed as clerk and bookkeeper. In 1893 Mrs Sidney Huestis appears in the directory (and for some years afterwards) as Sidney abandoned the family about that time. Lila continued to raise the family and did not re-marry.

My grandfather, Edgar Roy Huestis, was born in 1886 while the family lived in Halifax. He would have been 6 or 7 when his father left. I think that Roy finished school and joined the Bank of Montreal in 1902, working as a clerk. He was moved around to many branches, including Canso, NS where he met Lila Bishop. Lila was raised in New Minas, NS on a small farm, now probably buried under the New Minas shopping strip. At the time of her marriage she was working in a general store in Canso, which would have been a booming community as it was the North American terminal for several undersea cables.

In 1918 Roy was drafted into the Canadian Army, in the Halifax Siege Battery. He was 32 years old by then, and unlikely to see service, but he was in uniform. Later that year he married Lila Bishop in a Baptist church in Dartmouth, NS with the service conducted by the bride's uncle.

Roy and Lila were later transferred with the Bank of Montreal to several towns in New Brunswick, including Andover, Shediac and Chatham. They retired in Chatham in the 1950's, and both are buried there.

From the Chatham, NB Gazette 14 April 1948

IS RETIRING AFTER 46 YEARS IN BANKING

After 18 years as local Bank of Montreal manager, Edgar R.T. Huestis announces that he is retiring on pension at the end of the month, completing a banking career of 46 years. Fortunately, Mr Huestis plans to continue to reside here, so that his coming retirement will not bring to an end his very active participation on the work of local organisations.

MR. HUESTIS WELL KNOWN FOR PUBLIC INTERESTS

In his lengthy service with the bank, Mr Huestis has had charge of several branches. Among the offices of which he was manager, before coming here in 1930, were those at Grand Falls, Nfld, Grand Falls, NB and at Perth and Shediac, NB

His activities in Chatham are numerous. He has acted as treasurer and organizer in Northumberland County East for the Canadian Red Cross national Appeals for Funds, Salvation Army Red Shield Home Front Appeals, Chinese Relief campaign and Canadian Cancer Society, of which he is honourary president in this district. Recently, Mr Huestis was elected a member of the finance committee, New Brunswick division for the latter body and also of the provincial executive of the Canadian Committee of the Canadian Red Cross Society. It is hoped that his retirement will enable Mr Huestis to devote even more time to his various offices.
